Pre-Conference workshop: geophysical prospection data processing for archaeology using Open-Source software

This hands-on workshop will teach you geophysical archaeological prospection data processing using open-source software. The practical sessions are designed to equip participants with essential skills and techniques for processing geophysical datasets.

Basic knowledge of EMI, GPR, and magnetometer data processing, as well as familiarity with programming (in Python or MATLAB) and the use of GIS software (QGIS), is recommended.

Price:  € 15 (Lunch and coffee breaks are included.)

max. 25 participants

Speakers

  • Tina Wunderlich (Kiel University, DE)
  • Guillaume Blanchy (Flanders Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (ILVO); Ghent University, BE)
  • Quentin Vitale (Laboratoire Archéorient, CNRS, FR)
  • Lionel Darras (Laboratoire Archéorient, CNRS, FR)

Topics

EMagPy : processing of frequency domain electromagnetic induction data

MultichannelGPR: processing of (multichannel) ground penetrating radar data

GeophPy: processing magnetometry data with GeophPy

Instructions

It is required that you bring your own laptop, with pre-installed software and downloaded datasets that will be used during the workshop.

Please assure that the following software, packages, and data are installed and dowloaded on your laptop:

  1. QGIS Long Term Release 3.40 (Windows) or long term release for your preferred platform;
  2. Matlab version 2024b. Matlab is supporting us with a dedicated conference license. You can download the correct MatLab version with a conference license here: https://www.mathworks.com/licensecenter/classroom/4929051/
  3. Python version 3.12 or above, and your preferred IDE for working with Python (recommended: visual studio code). Make sure that you have a dedicated Python environment to use during the workshop (information here, and here for those using conda).
  4. For the MultichannelGPR workshop, you can download scripts at: https://github.com/tinawunderlich/MultichannelGPR (potential updates can still occur before the workshop, so assure you have the most recent version)
  5. Python packages to be installed in the dedicated Python environment:

Both packages can be pip-installed.

  1. EMagPy stand alone GUI. For EMagPy, we will work with the Python API and the stand alone GUI. For this, it is important that you clone the repository on your computer (git clone https://gitlab.com/hkex/emagpy). Instructions can be found here: https://github.com/hkexgroup/emagpy under ‘Getting started’.
  2. For the MultichannelGPR workshop, the dataset you will work with can be downloaded here: https://cloud.rz.uni-kiel.de/index.php/s/5HpncB9ngRFSPsx . Password: ICAP2025_GPR

! Please make sure all is pre-installed and downloaded, and check functionality before the start of the workshop.
